Description:
Wellington's central city surf beach, Lyall bay is situated right next to the airport. Because of this you must phone the airport control tower on (04) 387 1980 and request their permission to launch. Failure to do so will have airport security after you. Do not go any further than halfway down the beach. This will have you in a “no fly zone” due to the airport.

Launching is done from the western end of the beach as it has the largest area and launching from anywhere else makes it too hard to get out and upwind through the shore break. Even the windsurfers rig up here so respect everyones space. Lyall only works in a southerly and is only for advanced riders due to the combination of gusty winds, shore break and large unpredictable waves. There are also powerlines on the road to contend with when launching so do be very careful.
